California, mountain bike tripBook

You'll enjoy a few rides within Giant Sequoia National Monument among these living pillars of history, but you'll also explore the excellent collection of trails in the surrounding Sequoia National Forest including the infamous Cannell Plunge. This trail system is highlighted by its large losses of elevation - numerous times you'll start your rides in high pine forest and end in classic California vegetation like oak and chaparral.

Short info:

  • 5 riding days
  • 4 nights lodging
  • High Pine Forest Singletrack, Lower Oak and Chaparral Singletrack and some Backcountry Dirt Roads
  • Kernville, California
  • this tour is for upper intermediate to advanced riders with good fitness and polished technical riding skills
  • base camp: Riverside lodging in Kernville, CA and Camp Nelson Lodge in Giant Sequoia National Monument

The initial and closing base camp is alongside the Kern River in a comfortable lodge, a very relaxing setting to return to each day after the ride.

You'll also spend two nights at the Camp Nelson Lodge in Giant Sequoia National Monument. Both locations will find you enjoying tasty dinners and campfires under the Sierras'

We consider the lodging for our tours a highlight. Let’s be honest – not everyone wants to camp out each night after a long day’s ride and that’s fine. In each tour location we’ve spent considerable time locating the lodging option that best suits the atmosphere for that particular area with the right mix of amenities there or close by.

Another highlight we pride ourselves on is comfort: a hot shower in a clean bathroom, a warm clean bed, sipping wine in a reclined chair, a dip in a hot tub or pool and maybe a soothing massage to knead those muscles after a full day ride.

The meals are a mixture of treats and samplings from great local restaurants and cafés.  We’re big believers in “living a day in the life” of the local culture and what better way to do that then enjoying local culinary delights?

Day 1
We'll meet on the first morning at the Kern River Inn B&B to get everyone loaded up for the first day's ride. This will be our lodging for the first two days, so feel free to book yourself here on your arrival night.

Day 2
Every great mountain bike destination has its signature ride and here it is The Plunge. That's not to say there isn't some climbing along the 26 miles, but the change in topography from top to bottom is breath taking.

Day 3
This morning we'll pack everything up early and head up to the Giant Sequoia National Monument. We'll be transferring to the Camp Nelson lodge as well.

Day 4
We start up in a lush cedar forest and climb up singletrack for several hours. The effort is challenging, but you will enjoy spectacular views of the Needles and the High Sierra along the way.

Day 5
We bookend our trip with another route through the Giant Sequoias. This time we ride through the incredible Freeman Grove in Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Final evening
After a great week of riding, we'll shuttle everyone back into Kernville to the Kern River Inn B&B. Thanks for joining us on the Giant Sequoia Tour!
